We are pleased to announce that the winner of the 2024 Charles Schmitt Prize is Angus Harwood Brown from Cambridge University for his paper, “Republican Hegemony as Perpetual Peace? Sieyès’ Theory of International Politics and the Intellectual Origins of Kant’s ‘Federation of Peoples’.” The panel commended the originality and rigour of the work, which explores an often overlooked aspect of Sieyès’ thought—its international dimension—drawing on a thorough understanding of his lesser-known writings.
The runner-up is David Guerrero from the Universitat de Barcelona, for his paper, “‘You Are a Bad Boy to Keep Sending Me Pretty Books’: Harold Laski, Justice Holmes, and the Prehistory of Free Speech as a ‘Marketplace of Ideas.’”
The prize, awarded annually by the International Society for Intellectual History, is made possible by donations from an anonymous benefactor and our publisher, Taylor & Francis, and recognises the contributions of Charles B. Schmitt (1933-1986) to the field of intellectual history.
